20 people have lost their lives to lightning strikes that are ripping
through the sky of the eastern Indian state of Bihar.
A thunderstorm affecting a region of Bihar has
resulted in 20 people dying from its lightning strikes within 8 districts.
The weather forecast outlines that more
thunderstorms with lightning should be expected for northern parts of the state
on Wednesday and Thursday.
Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar is appealing
to persons to adhere to the safety advice from the state’s disaster
management authority.
Reportedly, hundreds of people die in India
each year from lightning incidents during the monsoon rains.
In India, there are scores of people working
outdoors which is cited as the reason why the death toll is so high because
they are more vulnerable.
Minister Kumar announced that each family of
the 20 deceased will receive a compensation of 400,000 rupees.
